A Tribute Air (jordan that is).

Last week marked the release of the third color way of the twenty third Nike Air Jordan. So here in south Florida my friends and I along with the help of a number of sponsors threw a celebration to honor a basketball legend...... Michael Jordan. Below you will see all of the hard work that went into this event and I hope that the attendees enjoyed it (it sure looked like they did). Check out the pics.

The line was THICK!

The ladies were repping hard!

The set up was amazing!

We even repped Jordan Motor Sports!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the event.

Ok now what we have been doing for a while now is what we call a sneaker battle. Now I know what some of you maybe thinking, oh that is wack, its tired, its old. Anyway we do ours a little diffrent. You dont win for the hottest shoes you win for what you know about the shoes, and you have to have them on you feet!

First Up '99 retro 4's

Next was OG Black 4's (from 1989!!!!)

Next were the 23's (this guy camped out for 5 days to get these!)

Last up was a friend of mine (Pee-Wee, he killed it!)

OG fire red 5's on his neck and these on his feet!

As the winner, Pee-wee walked away with a new pair of black 23's! (and the poster)

Here are some extra pics of the night.

I just want to give a big shout out to Mr. hypebeast for the pics (great job!), Filimike, The sponsors (Miami sole, Shoe gallery, Mr. R's, Like Mike Clothing, and Heavens Touch Carwash), V, Female Sneaker Fiend, JayALLDay, Dj Louie Arson, and last but not least MJ.

When did athletic shoes stop getting sponsored by athletes??????

Ok enough is enough! I have to put my foot down! After seeing a video on line of the latest hot right now rapper (in 6 months you wont remember him) saying he got his own shoe line coming out I almost threw my computer out of the window. What has the athletic shoe market come to? When did rappers need athletic shoes? Most of them now a days don't even move around the stage (wow that sounded old), so why in the hell do they need their own line of athletic shoes? I don't even think the kids of this generation know who Michael Jordan is (its a stretch but think about it). Of course they know his shoes but have they seen a game? Do they even remember when Shaq was playing for Orlando and he dunked the ball so hard he broke the rim? Those are instances where athletic shoes are needed; not when your "supermanning dat ho" or "throwing up the roc". Those are not feats of amazing agility, strength, or athleticism so why in the hell do rappers need their own athletic shoes???!!!

Blazin' Kicks: 1992

The story goes something like this, but I’ll leave it to a young SP to tell the story.

It’s 1992 and this summer I busted my ass working more jobs than any other West Indian, and certainly any Jamaicans. Yes, I had 5 jobs and I was running around like a crazy man, but I had a “prize” that I had my eyes set on and there was no stopping me.

Cousin Anthony had the ill Chevy Blazer that he jerry-rigged the stereo system in and even though it was a little rough around the edges, he was riding. Shoot, at the age of 19, it was all about riding around in a whip, dressing fly and pulling girls.

Anthony and I bumped around Brooklyn whenever we could, but I was in full-effect mode because I had a plan to get my own Blazer, but not the 2-door joint, I wanted the 4-door joint in money green- Chevy S-10 Blazer.

I worked as a production assistant and the money was good. At $100 a day, the money was right on point. The only issue was that a day could be 8-hours or it could be 16-hours, but it was fun and the folks that I worked with were cool as hell. The fools even trusted me so much that they let me take the production box truck home to Brooklyn with well over $1 million in equipment in the rear. Crazy, right?

So, I saved money like a T-rex with short arms and every dollar I made went into the top drawer in the dresser. I was stacking paper like there was no tomorrow.

When I wasn’t working as a production assistant, I worked at the Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center, located right on Fulton Street and minutes away from the Albee Square Mall and the clothing and sneaker spots.

Everyday for lunch, I’d go across the street to the bodega run by some Middle Eastern cats and get a smoked turkey and American cheese sub and Arizona Iced Tea for $3.00. It was all about saving money, but looking back I should have take a sandwich from home for lunch and saved that $15.00 per week. Oh, well such is life.

When the day rolled around and I went to the car dealership and saw the Blazer, parked on the showroom floor all polished up and Armor Alled out, I knew exactly the whip for me.

With $3 thousand in my pockets, burning a whole in them to buy clothes and kicks, I put the money down on the Blazer and convinced my Aunt C to take out a loan on the ride; it was on like Donkey Kong!

When we picked it up on July 30, 1992, it had 400 miles on the odometer and the new-car smell was mesmerizing. I was the MAN!

There was no way folks in Brooklyn or Smithfield (RI) would be able to stand it!

Saga continues: 2 right feet

Back on December 13, 2007, OSD reported that two right feet clad in Adidas and Reebok sneakers, respectively washed ashore in Vancouver.

Well, it looks like another right foot washed ashore, this time in the Gulf Islands, in the Strait of Georgia.

We don't know what's going on in Canada, but we're sure Adidas and Reebok don't want folks to get the wrong idea. More information to come soon.

TV Special: Swoosh! Inside Nike

A number of us at OSD decided to have a little get together this evening so we could talk about politics (yes, sneakerheads do VOTE), the latest debacle of Jay-Z getting pissy with Rihanna at the Grammy’s, the economy and, of course, sneakers.

So, we just finished watching the CNBC special-“Swoosh! Inside Nike”-and it was good to see and hear people weigh in on the good products that Nike produces, as well as hear about some of their challenges, such as poor working conditions in Vietnam and the blow back from their half-hearted initial foray into the world of skateboarding.

A few things that we noticed is that for a company that was started by Bill Bowerman’s desire to make running shoes lighter, while offering good traction, for his track athletes, it was Phil Knight that had the vision to take some risks and go after German-based Adidas, that was top-dog in the early ‘70s.

From the beginning, the company focused on producing great performing products to then signing a young Michael Jordan from the University of North Carolina as a key endorser, to marketing Bo Jackson as a do-it-all athlete and Charles Barkley as a powerful basketball player that bucked the trend by saying that athletes were not role models; Nike seems to have always “Gone Hard” with it.

A point that a couple people brought throughout our conversation was the lack of coverage or mention of Nike’s charity work, the donations or the rebuilding of parks to allow kids to play and get exercise. Maybe, just maybe, that story is on the DVD that CNBC began hawking at the end of the special. Let’s hope so.

Hearing Michael Jordan say that he wore Converse while at UNC-Chapel Hill, but wanted to sign with Adidas was monumental and the person or persons that chose to “pass” on MJ are certainly still trying to get their foot out of their ass(es).

The hype for the Air Jordan XX3 has been in fever pitch, which, after watching “Swoosh! Inside Nike”, will not be the finale of the Air Jordan line of basketball sneakers. Why would Nike and Jordan Brand walk away from a line that has been so successful 5-years after MJ played his last NBA game? They’d be silly, to say the least.

Darren Rovell did a good job interviewing Phil Knight, even though we can’t get over the fact that Buck wears those damned sunglasses for every interview. Who does he think he is? Just because he’s worth $9 billion, does that negate the fact that we like looking a man in the eyes?

When Milo Rosario was interviewed, it felt good to see a sneaker connoisseur whom we know and is truly passionate about sneakers. He’s a true stand-up guy that we’ve had the opportunity to hang out with at a few events in Chicago, Seattle and Las Vegas.

Seeing the footage from the lines to purchase the titanium Air Jordan XX3s, the Dunk Exchanges and the hand-to-hand exchange of cash for sneakers is something that we’ve become accustomed to see, but at some level it still is amazing to see a pair of sneakers-made of leather, rubber, nylon, suede, etc. - being coveted by so many people.

So the piece was good, but we have a good inclination that the upcoming sneaker documentary from New York- Know You Got Sole- is going to give viewers an entirely different perspective that CNBC didn’t cover nor could they cover it well.

Footwear news: Counterfeiting in VA

To all the sneakerheads that reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia, this is specifically for you.

If you feel inclined to buy counterfeit Nike sneakers and Levi dungarees for the purpose of selling them to some unknowing dude that yearns for the crispy jeans and latest sneakers, DON'T do it in VA.

Thanks to Senator Richard "Dick" Saslaw, he was able to convince his peers to pass a new bill, voted 39-1 on Monday to broaden the scope of the state's trademark infringement laws to include bootleg products.

So, y'all in VA need to leave the fake goods to states such as NY, CA, IL, PA and FL, to name a few.

Yes, the above Air Jordan X's are fake and were unknowingly bought and given to SP as a present some years ago.

Air Bush

Well, look who's wearing a brand new pair of Air Jordan XX3s, a few days before they're officially released? It's Reggie Bush.

While I'm not surprised much these days to see an athlete of Reggie's caliber wearing sneakers, what's surprising is the fact that Reggie, who's signed to Adidas, was pictured in Malibu, CA yesterday wearing the competition's sneakers. Somebody messed up and I'd bet dimes to dollars that it was Reggie, himself, that made the fashion faux pas. (Never wear the competition's sneakers and NEVER mix brands....Adidas shorts and Nike sneakers!)

I guess the saying goes that when Reggie signed with Adidas in April 2006, he must have had a good attorney to have them write in a clause that he can wear other athletic footwear brands? If so, hat-tip to Reginald Alfred the second.

Obama Kicks

If you've been living under a rock and haven't read a newspaper or walked by a television that's highlighting the latest debate or polls, then you need to quickly step out of your comfort zone and get a LIFE!

Obama's candidacy for the Democratic nomination is getting stronger, like Kanye West at the Grammy's, and even though we at OSD rarely write about politics (yeah, right!?), we had to post these pictures of a pair of customized Air Force 1s honoring Obama's run for Big Seat.

Reebok: Pump Up & Air Out

If you grew up in the '90s like many of us at OSD, then you might be able to recall the classic Reebok commercials that featured players such as Michael Chang (tennis), Doc Rivers (basketball), Dominique Wilkins (basketball) and player-turned-coach Pat Riley.

The best quote from the commercial comes at the 23 second mark when Doc Rivers says, "Some people like BMWs, I like gym shoes."

OSD Spotlight: DJ Clark Kent

It's hard to find anyone who doesn't know about music producer DJ Clark Kent, but what many folks don't know about him, is his affliction with an incurable case of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder.

For those of you that have been reading OSD for some time or called into the OSD Talk Show on Wednesday nights (9:30 PM EST), then you know that Clark is serious about his sneakers.

Listen to this episode where Clark breaks it down and talks kicks and argues whether there is or isn't a "sneaker culture".

Sneaker Spotlight: 40/40 Club

I'm always amazed with the number of "special sneakers" that celebrities and athletes have tossed their way. What's more amazing is when that celebrity has their own sneaker line with a competing company ala Jay-Z, who still has a deal with Reebok, is often pictured wearing Nike footwear.

Well, a few years ago the good folks at Nike decided to offer their "blessings" and make a special Air Force 1 for Jay-Z's 40/40 Club in New York City.

Without further adu.....we at OSD present the 40/40 Club White/Black-Silver Air Force 1 lows:
