Remembering Jam Master Jay (RUN DMC)

I'll never forget the the time RUN DMC visited the US Virgin Islands. It was 1985, and Hip Hop, besides sports, was my focus.
I was enamored by the music that was pouring out of New York City, flowing as consistently as Niagra Falls.
RUN DMC has always been the group that epitomized the culture, the lifestyle and they set the fashion bar for many.
While Run and DMC did their thing on the microphone, my eyes were always glued on the disc jockey- Jam Master Jay (real name: Jason Mizell).
You see, Jam Master Jay had a way with working the "wheels of steel", the soon-to-be defunct Technics 1200s.
His scratches and cuts were always on cue, and even when one of them seemed out of synch, upon listening to the song a second time, it was then that I realized what Jay was intending.
To this day, I own a number of RUN DMC's albums, a few cassette tapes and the more common CDs and MP3s.
Today marks the 8-year anniversary of Jam Master Jay's (JMJ) murder.
I can remember it like it was yesterday when I heard the news: I was driving on the Long Island Expressway while listening to New York station, 97.1 FM.
To hear the news that the "silent one", as I had dubbed Jay, was killed in his recording studio in Queens was so disheartening that I had to pull over on the L.I.E. As Funk Master Flex reported the sad news........I cried.
I recall hearing, for the first time, songs "Sucker MCs", "Tougher Than Leather", "Rock Box" and "Walk This Way", and I always smiling, but it was "My Adidas" that spoke to my sole (pun intended).
I have always liked sneakers, and when Run DMC rapped about their love of the shell-toed sneakers, I immediately identified with the song.
When Run DMC rocked Madison Square Garden and told everyone to take off one of their Adidas sneakers and, "Hold them in the air!", I did and so did almost 15,000 other kids.
Little did I know the significance of that moment in sneaker history and how it would serve me in the future and today.
So, today I plan to listen to "Run DMCs Greatest Hits" and remember Jason Mizell a.k.a. Jam Master Jay and give thanks for the memories and him being a Hip Hop pioneer, and someone who motivated me to hear, listen and feel the music.
Walk GOOD JMJ, you're missed but not forgotten.

OSD Talk Show: Ep. 143: 3-Year Anniversary Show

When the OSD Talk Show was created 3-years ago, little did I know that a simple, albeit more complicated than it sounds, Internet talk show, dedicated to the people that like sneakers ALOT, would motivate others to express their passion for wearing and talking about kicks!

Looking back now, I shouldn't have thought otherwise, but with the creation of magazines such as Sneaker Freaker, Sole Collector, Kicksclusive, Sneaker Marmalade and countless other publications that I'm not aware of, the footwear industry is always changing.  As long as people have feet, there is going to be a need for shoes and, especially, sneakers!

In this episode, we discuss sneaker news such as Sonny Vaccaro returning to claim the summer basketball crown and his pending deal with Li Ning, along with Usain Bolt renewing his contract with Puma until 2013.

Also, we're joined by GLC of G.O.O.D. Music and listen as he talks kicks, his new distribution deal and what he and others are doing to stop youth violence in Chicago.  Chuuch!

OSD's homie Kellen Dengler has been putting in serious work being the hired gun for filming some of the latest and hottest footwear events in NY. H-Town Sneaker Summit Winter '10 RECAP

When Houston says, "We HAVE a problem", they don't mean the near catastrophic kind that puts life and limbs at risk, but rather they're letting it be KNOWN that they know how to hold a sneaker event that draws sneaker aficionados and all-around sneaker lovers from all over the United States.

Check out some of the dopeness that went down in H-Town!

Now, go put your "H's" in the air! Walk GOOD!

      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!
Official H-Town Sneaker Summit Winter '10 Event Photo ReCap

The H-Town Sneaker Summit recently wrapped up the sixth 'winter edition' of their bi-annual event in Houston, Texas. The event is the largest and longest
running of it's kind in the entire south west, and brings out sneaker
enthusiast from all walks of life. The event hosts local boutiques,
brands, sneaker enthusiasts, and collectors in a large and diverse party environment.
      This season attendees were greeted with the likes of Special Guests;
Bobbito Garcia and Levi Maestro. Other notables in attendance were well known south west sneaker ambassedors; Bun B of UGK, and Greg Street from Atlanta, GA.

Levi Maestro has taken the world by storm with his viral internet video
show 'Maestro Knows'. In just a short time this young videographer/director has
worked with and documented a wide and diverse group of many industry pillars such as; Mr Cartoon, Warren G, 9th Wonder, Terry Kennedy, Geoff Rowley, and the Nike Campus, among others. Fans worldwide have been requesting that Maestro produce a tee shirt to express their love for his hit show. At this very event Levi Maestro kicked off a world wide tour with the premier release of his very first 'Maestro Knows' tee. The MK13 tee was made available to fans at the H-Town Sneaker Summit before anywhere else.

And what more can be said about the legendary Bobbito Garcia, a true renaissance man! Bobbito has been wildly successful at almost anything he touches all over the map; DJ Extraordinaire, Professional Basketball Player, and an Original Sneaker Connoisseur are just a few of the things he is well known worldwide for. Bobbito meeted and greeted fans at the H-Town Sneaker Summit before stepping up to the wheels of steel to successfully shut the party down with one of his legendary DJ mixes.

Bun B of UGK loyally represents for his hometown crowd at what seems to be every H-Town Sneaker Summit. At this seasons summit Bun displayed his usual but new collection of rare and yet to be released shoes. However Bun had a secret in store for the crowd at the end of the event, as he gave away almost every pair of shoes on his display table! Not only that but on the way to the venue Bun and Maestro stopped by the Chris Paul in store event at the nearby House Of Hoops Northline in Houston. There they picked up all three colorways of Chris' newest signature shoes (the Air Jordan CP3.III) all blessed with Chris' autograph, and then gave them away at the Sneaker Summit! You might want to stay tuned to Maestro Knows for more on this adventure soon!

Once again fans came from far a wide came to participate and witness a community based event like no other. The event somehow tops itself each and every time, and we have come to the conclusion that it is because of the new and old like minded and passionate people that loyally attend each season. Adidas on the Come Up?

Adidas isn't playing around when it comes to the world of sprinting.  Having looked around at what Usain Bolt did in Beijing, at the 2008 Olympics, rumor has it that they've signed, what they hope to be the next "fastest Jamaican to lace-up some spikes" in 19-year-old Yohan Blake.

The 19-year-old Blake has been running on all cylinders and set a personal best at the 2007 Carifta Games by setting the national junior record of 10.11 seconds in the 100m.

This past weekend, at the Fifth Camperdown Classic, Blake ran a 46.80 seconds in the 400m.

Word around JA is that Blake signed a five-year $1 million (US) deal with the 3-stripes that allows him to pursue his education and training gearing up to the 2012 Olympics, where he would very well compete against training-partner Bolt.  This is going to be very interesting!

So, keep your eyes peeled for Blake, for now you've been brought into the belly of the beast that is track and field.  More FIRE!!!

      Adidas: New line- 'Style Essentials'

So Adidas is going after the teen-market, well over 3-years too late, with their new line called 'Style Essentials'.

"Industry insiders say Style Essentials and dozens of competitors acknowledge a dirty little secret: Most athletic shoes aren't worn for their intended purpose. Never have been."

REALLY? We, at OSD, have been saying this for well over a year and the subject popped up on Episode 69 with MC Shan.

      Hittin' Switches

As a sneaker enthusiast, I try to keep my eyes and ears to the ground to see and hear the ground swells and, from time to time, I catch something that most folks would miss entirely or gloss over with a slight 'humph'.

Well, yesterday was an interesting day at Wimbledon as 3rd-ranked-in-the-world tennis player Novak Djokovic was seen hittin' switches with his choice of footwear.

Novak, whose been an Adidas sponsored athlete for the past 4-years, was facing Michael Berrer of Germany, when a few OSD fans noted that Novak was rocking Adidas from head to, er, wait a minute...not toe.

In what appeared to be a pair of Nike Air Max Breathe Cage IIs, Novak took whiteout or a similar product and covered the 'Nike' name and swoosh.

Check out what the Nike Air Max Breathe Cage II look like and compare them to the pair of kicks that Novak wore in the match. Hmmmmmm?

      Sneaker Stocks

An aspect about the OSD Blog is that you’ll get concise sneaker-related news with no filler--unlike some crab cakes found at an establishment, which will remain nameless, in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor—we keep it real!

For folks that have been listening to the OSD-Obsessive Sneaker Disorder talk show, you may recall a number of episodes back that we discussed the stock market but specifically as it relates to the sneaker manufacturers.

When companies such as Nike, Adidas, Timberland and others are publicly traded companies, we always recommend buying stock in companies that you like and use their products.

So, even though there are many sneakerheads running around professing that they’re a ‘Nike-head’, we encourage you to do your homework and research Nike and the other sneaker companies.

One company that I’d like to highlight for folks is Skechers USA (NYSE: SKX). Yes, that Skechers; the company that owns Unltd. By Marc Ecko, Zoo York and BEBE Sport footwear.

It’s hard to believe that a company that has made their name by jackin’ other brands’ designs has stepped up their game by releasing their own casual shoes and sneakers.

Their stock has taken a beating, similar to Nike and Adidas to name a few, down more than 40% since Jan. 1, to close Wednesday at $20.37.

So, as the stock market continues to shake folks more than the Olajuwon’s ‘Dream Shake’, Skechers might be a company to look at more closely, that is, if you’re not too busy spending your money on the Jordan 7/ 16 pack.

      KG: Game 3 Kicks

As we wrote last week, Kevin Garnett will be wearing a new pair of Adidas Team Signature Commander sneakers for each of the Finals game.

Well, check out this pair that KG wore in tonight's game. Word has gotten to us that an avid listener of the OSD-Obsessive Sneaker Disorder talk show is going to bid on the sneaker auction later on this week.

Good luck and if you haven't already rolled your pennies, you will need $1,017 to buy a pair.

Kevin Garnett to wear Adidas Team Signature Commander in NBA Finals

Well look what the cat dragged in and who finally stepped up their game for the NBA Finals!? Adidas is hitting Kevin Garnett off with an ill sneaker and one whose proceeds go to benefit the NBA Cares program in Boston.

KG will be wearing the Team Signature Commander throughout the Finals when the Celtics take on the Lakers, to commemorate the Celtics' quest for NBA supremecy. KG will wear a different pair of sneakers for each game, each displaying the game number, the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy and a profile of KG's face.

Get your loose change ready and run to the nearest CoinStar change counter because you'll need $1,017 to buy a pair of these kicks. Word is that Adidas will make 8 pairs per game (this means that a total of 56 pairs may be floating around if the NBA Finals go seven games)and will be sold at Celtics.com, the TD Banknorth Garden Pro Shop and NBA Store in New York City.

While the official release for the Team Signature Commander is not due to be released until October 2008, sneakerheads have been buzzing about the sneakers worn by KG throughout the Eastern Conference Finals and Adidas decided to do something special and make a move now.

KG will also autograph one pair to be auctioned on NBA.com after the Finals.
