Puma x YO MTV Raps: Forever Fresh Indeed
Confucius said, "A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step." Those words could not be more true when you take a style of music that was gaining cross-over popularity and add glitzy videos that took viewers on a metaphorical ride was igniting fascination all over America and eventually the globe.
Rap music is said to have gotten its start in the Bronx, New York and to this day I haven't had anyone try to convince me otherwise. The South Bronx, to be specific, is where the music and the culture emerged as a grass-roots (ghetto) movement that gave young and hungry cats an opportunity to speak about what they saw on their streets and in their 'hood. Instead of simply writing poetry like a Langston Hughes or Miguel Algarín, the men and women of the Boogie Down kicked verses that gave us a glimpse into their soul.
In the late '70s, jams were held in various city parks or empty lots where the DJ hot-wired a street lamp to supply the electricity. Disc Jockeys such as Kool Herc, DJ Hollywood and Afrika Bambaataa, were the main attraction but with the emergence of the MC, cats like The Chief Rocker Busy Bee, The Furious Five and The Cold Crush Bros, they flipped the script and it became a contest as to who could make up the most outlandish stories.
With the stories becoming more grandiose and its popularity growing because mix tapes began to pop up in some of the most obscure places-outside of the Bronx, Brooklyn and uptown Manhattan- such as Montana and Arkansas, the television networks began to pick-up on the appeal of rap music. Black Entertainment Network (BET), which aired in 1981, didn't embrace rap as one would think it would have. The first out the gate was Video Music Box on Channel 31 (WNYE) on UHF by the pioneering duo of Ralph McDaniels and Lionel "the Vid Kid" Martin.
When MTV decided it had sat long enough on the outside looking in, they called upon the quintessential hipster, Fab Five Freddie Braithwaite to serve as host. Fab Five Freddie was known in the community to bring exposure to graffiti artists and figured out how to get them paid-in-full by moving their graffiti art from the subways to the art galleries. Because of his persona, Freddie was a natural for television.
When YO! MTV RAPS debuted on Saturday, August 6, 1988, I recall watching in amazement as Freddie introduced video after video, the first being Eric B. & Rakim's Follow the Leader, with the thought that rap music was finally getting it just due and the exposure would prove the naysayers that it wasn't noise, rather an art form that was started by the people and was meant for the people. On a personal note, the pilot aired for 2 weeks and featured RUN-DMC and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince whom had both performed concerts in the US Virgin Islands earlier in the year.
It comes as no surprise as YO! MTV RAPS and PUMA team-up to celebrate 25 years of The Clyde- a sneaker that pays homage to Walt "Clyde" Frazier, known for being very flamboyant in dress and whose on court game was defined as "super cool" because of his cool, calm and collected demeanor.
The collaboration is a star-studded one that applauds rap music, risk taking on MTVs part and fashion sense to combine the use of a sneaker- The Clyde- that is embraced by sneaker lovers the world over.
The choice of sneaker makes sense because every b-boy and girl can recognize the sneaker- it's a Clyde after all; one of the most recognizable sneakers. Breakdancers of today and of yesteryear see it and immediately associate it with poppin' and lockin' and tabletop back spins. Do you recall searching for large cardboard boxes to use as you floor for breakin' or going to your local appliance store and asking for the cardboard box that the refrigerator was packaged in? Well, those days are few and far between for this homeboy, but breakers do exist and annual breakdancing competitions are held, some with large corporate sponsors; just search for 'breakdancing' on YouTube.com and you'll find over 6,000 videos.
PUMA continues to Push-It like Salt-N-Pepa (1988) and allowed MTV to act like a Tramp and get wild with The Clyde. Is there anything better than hot pink and black or lime green and black on a suede Clyde? Its like butter baby, like butter!
So, grab your old-school toothbrush, fat laces and, if you're daring enough, find some Gazelle frames and rock them without lenses. You, too, can be FOREVER FRESH and still do the Ed Lover Dance!

H-Town Sneaker Summit Winter '10 RECAP

When Houston says, "We HAVE a problem", they don't mean the near catastrophic kind that puts life and limbs at risk, but rather they're letting it be KNOWN that they know how to hold a sneaker event that draws sneaker aficionados and all-around sneaker lovers from all over the United States.
Check out some of the dopeness that went down in H-Town!
Now, go put your "H's" in the air! Walk GOOD!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!Official H-Town Sneaker Summit Winter '10 Event Photo ReCap
The H-Town Sneaker Summit recently wrapped up the sixth 'winter edition' of their bi-annual event in Houston, Texas. The event is the largest and longest
running of it's kind in the entire south west, and brings out sneaker
enthusiast from all walks of life. The event hosts local boutiques,
brands, sneaker enthusiasts, and collectors in a large and diverse party environment.
This season attendees were greeted with the likes of Special Guests;
Bobbito Garcia and Levi Maestro. Other notables in attendance were well known south west sneaker ambassedors; Bun B of UGK, and Greg Street from Atlanta, GA.
Levi Maestro has taken the world by storm with his viral internet video
show 'Maestro Knows'. In just a short time this young videographer/director has
worked with and documented a wide and diverse group of many industry pillars such as; Mr Cartoon, Warren G, 9th Wonder, Terry Kennedy, Geoff Rowley, and the Nike Campus, among others. Fans worldwide have been requesting that Maestro produce a tee shirt to express their love for his hit show. At this very event Levi Maestro kicked off a world wide tour with the premier release of his very first 'Maestro Knows' tee. The MK13 tee was made available to fans at the H-Town Sneaker Summit before anywhere else. And what more can be said about the legendary Bobbito Garcia, a true renaissance man! Bobbito has been wildly successful at almost anything he touches all over the map; DJ Extraordinaire, Professional Basketball Player, and an Original Sneaker Connoisseur are just a few of the things he is well known worldwide for. Bobbito meeted and greeted fans at the H-Town Sneaker Summit before stepping up to the wheels of steel to successfully shut the party down with one of his legendary DJ mixes.
Bun B of UGK loyally represents for his hometown crowd at what seems to be every H-Town Sneaker Summit. At this seasons summit Bun displayed his usual but new collection of rare and yet to be released shoes. However Bun had a secret in store for the crowd at the end of the event, as he gave away almost every pair of shoes on his display table! Not only that but on the way to the venue Bun and Maestro stopped by the Chris Paul in store event at the nearby House Of Hoops Northline in Houston. There they picked up all three colorways of Chris' newest signature shoes (the Air Jordan CP3.III) all blessed with Chris' autograph, and then gave them away at the Sneaker Summit! You might want to stay tuned to Maestro Knows for more on this adventure soon!Once again fans came from far a wide came to participate and witness a community based event like no other. The event somehow tops itself each and every time, and we have come to the conclusion that it is because of the new and old like minded and passionate people that loyally attend each season. We can not wait for our next event in the summer of 2010! What The F*ck Shoes! Downside of Free Enterprise
As identified by the zodiac sign, I (Sean "Paper Chasr" Williams) am a Capricorn. One of things well documented about us Capricorns is that we appreciate creative ways of "gettin' money". I personally applaud folks that create a new lane on an already crowded highway and roll straight past everyone at the speed of life. Having said that...I am completely annoyed with companies that make absolutely lame attempts to do the same. There ARE some things that companies should look at from the outside and appreciate the view, instead of wishing you were one of the things immortalized in the scenery. I mean, there's athletes, and there are fans of the sport. You know, the ones who buy season tickets to the games but not because they think they will get a chance to actually play (unless it's the L.A. Clippers).
"OK Pape, What is it this week?" you're asking...It's footwear companies (established, new, and let's give it a shot types) that put out blatant ripoffs or absolutely hideous sneakers and shoes that should have been killed before they were created! Those are the types of footwear I classify as What The F*ck shoes! So here are some examples of what I'm talking about. Feel free to share your opinions.... WALK GOOD!

Cadillac sneakers and shoes...REALLY GM? Was licensing the logo of one of the few cash cows you have left a way to avoid bankruptcy? This is worse than the CEO flying a private jet to D.C. asking for bailout money!!! (Maybe) Our tax money went to guys who make decisions like this America. The Shoes in the bottom of the 1st picture take aim at the old Bally shoe look. Clae Footwear also recently brought back this style of shoe (but I like Clae- Big ups dudes).

U.S. Polo Association Air Max 90(why?) Really guys...(that's all I can say)
Fila/Supra I guess this is Fila's way of telling Supra to watch your back! Get in line Fila..Levis Beat you to it!
Fila/Vans You too Vans...You're on Fila's Hit list (or Rip List if you will)!
And lastly, PUMA wanted in too! We can make crazy wack sneakers with the best of them! A Classic brand like Puma does not need to do this.

Tommy Smith , The Black Fist, and the 44th President

Defiant Olympic Gold medalist Tommy Smith (Mexico City 1968) and his family allowed a photographer to be present as they celebrated the Inauguration of America's 44th President (America's 1st Black President). 40 years later folks still remember "The Black Fist". Just ask Puma. They released a limited edition Tommy Smith sneaker last year celebrating his defiance in Mexico City. Salute to Tommy Smith!

Bolt dashes hopes in Beijing

When Usain Bolt was seen holding up his Theseus II spikes from PUMA, it confirmed once again that Nike and Adidas had been getting b*tch slapped, not only by Li Ning, but by the often-overlooked PUMA brand at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The world's fastest man blew out of the starting block and with 20 meters left, he looked left and looked right to gauge where the competition was and then proceeded to celebrate in a way typically seen only after racers cross the finish line. He had just run a 9.68 unofficial time to be later confirmed as 9.69 by the judges.
As he headed to the finish line, Bolt pounded his chest and began celebrating the win that was billed as the-race-for-the-ages, pitting him against his fellow countryman, Asafa Powell, and Tyson Gay from America. Gay failed to qualify for the final and Powell finished a disappointing fifth in 9.95.

As Bolt circled the National Stadium dancing and blowing kisses to the stunned crowd of 90,000, one could only imagine what the scene was like on the island of Jamaica.
By PUMA having signed Bolt it was more than just a race. It was a show down of brands between Nike which signed Asafa Powell and Adidas which has Tyson Gay. “It was a great allusion to the footwear wars,” says Larry Eder, who runs Running Network, an athletics website.

Due to the Olympic 100m final being a race the world watches, sportswear sales are driven by the race and used as a tool for signing top athletes to a brand. It's a battle between Nike and PUMA to sign the top Jamaican sprinters.
The Jamaican federation was signed to PUMA, but many of it's athletes signed individual deals with Nike. The only athlete that PUMA was able to keep was Bolt, and they have to be ecstatic right about now!

Trends on TODAY
It's September 1st and, if you live in New England such as I do, you may have noticed the leaves are starting to change colors and before we know it, autumn will be here.
While it's still warm, get out and enjoy the weather and, particularly, enjoy the Labor Day weekend....the unofficial end of summer.
If you happen to be a fan of the TODAY show, you may have seen Chris Brown performing on the plaza and doing his thing. What struck me as surprising is not only did homeboy have the teenage girls screaming, he also had the grown women doing the same and nearly drooling.
After watching a little bit of his performance I couldn't help but notice that he was wearing a Sergio Tacchini track suit and PUMA sneakers in a NY Knicks colorway.
Now, here is where the fun begins. Can you tell me what is the name of the PUMA sneakers that Chris Brown is wearing? If you know the answer, send me an email to obsessivesneakerdisorder@gmail.com.

It's Puma YO!

It looks like PUMA is back at it again, this time releasing some more PUMA Clyde sneakers that will be available to the public at the PUMA flagship stores come September 15th.
After the success of the YO! MTV Raps PUMA Clyde's in September 2006, it comes as no surprise that 4 new Clydes are being released honoring Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, MC Shan and Dr. Dre and Ed Lover:

PUMA, in its own way, is showing love to each rapper and radio/ television personality and the impact that they've had on culture and how they continue to serve as change agents. Be it a party song like The Show or The Bridge, which started the trend of "dis" tracks, to Set It Off and daily doses of The Ed Lover Dance (1989-1995) and movies such as Who's the Man?(1993). It's about time and I thank you.
It's PUMA YO! and they're doing it BIG time!

It's a NO!
So, it's June 12th and this is my first post for the month of June. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to post but besides being sick and dealing with some negative feelings towards the internet, I was just laying in the cut and gathering data.
As someone that has enjoyed a fresh pair of sneakers since 1985, there is something to be said about the state of SNEAKERS these days. The state of sneakers is really simply stated: It SUCKS!!
If you're a sneaker connoisseur that's been into kicks for sometime, then you know exactly where I'm coming from. With the onslaught of supposed hyper-strikes, limited edition and so many collaboration that they make Richard Simmons look sane, the sneaker culture (dubiously called the sneaker sub-culture)is in need of CPR.
Just take a look at any of the releases by New Balance, who despite the Super Team 33 1st release of kicks being dope...it was too late; look at Nike with their new basketball sneakers that surely resemble the Air Jordan III or even the PUMA Cat Lo's that are being released. What happened to creativity and innovativeness?!
A couple months ago, a couple of guys reached out to me to get me involved in opening a boutique store that would cater to the sneakerhead culture and fashion conscientious women and men in the Northeast. It was an honor to be approached, but knowing what I already have on my plate and not feeling that the time is right to open a boutique, I kindly told them, "Thank you, but no thank you." You see, it's ALL about timing and the timing isn't right.
When I look at the companies that are building their reputation and doing it well, I have to look at companies like K-Swiss, Greedy Genius and JB Classics.
K-Swiss knows that they have to change their image from that of white men playing tennis in their bright-white polos and nut-cracker shorts. They attempted to get "hip" 3 years ago when they ran a number of television ads that, to the smart consumer and sneakerhead, it looked fake and that they tried too hard to pretend to be cool and it ultimately bit them in the ass. When they switched their approach and went with the, "This is who we are and this is who we're growing-up to be" feel, the reception was alot better. Now, with the upcoming release of the Si-18's and other Classics with a new color palette, they look like they're ready to put in work and carve out a section of the block.
Greedy Genius is one of those companies that is led by a dynamic-duo, Mikhayel and Hue, that hit up MAGIC a few years ago and hit it hard. They not only were able to write a large order with Barney's of New York, rumored to be half a million dollars, but they were also able to build a reputation as a "cool" new sneaker line.
JB Classics has been able to carve a niche and have a strong following in the Northeast. JB has been doing his thing for awhile and I was glad to see JB Classics getting some love in the Wall Street Journal.
So, as the month of June rolls on, I simply ask the companies to stop flooding the market and pump the breaks on all the collaborations. It's time to retool and retool NOW!
